Potential Price Increases for American Consumers

Fri 4th Apr, 2025

The ongoing trade tensions are set to impact various consumer goods in the United States, with significant price hikes anticipated due to new tariffs on imports. Major categories affected include footwear, electronics, toys, and clothing, primarily sourced from countries like China and Vietnam.

Shoes
Last year, over 180 billion kronor worth of shoes were imported into the U.S. from China and Vietnam, accounting for approximately 70% of all footwear imports. With the latest tariff announcements, Chinese imports are subject to a 34% tariff, stacking on top of an existing 20% tariff, resulting in a total of 54%. Vietnam is also facing proposed tariffs of 46%.

Computers and Tablets
The U.S. imported computer hardware and tablets from China, Vietnam, and Taiwan, valued at over 450 billion kronor last year. A substantial increase in the prices of consumer electronics is expected, affecting an array of products from Wi-Fi routers to household appliances. Analysts predict that if companies like Apple pass on the costs to consumers, a new iPhone could potentially cost over 22,000 kronor.

Toys
The Toy Association, a leading industry group, reports that approximately 77% of toys sold in the U.S. are manufactured in China. The industry is not structured to absorb tariffs of this magnitude, leading to projections of at least a 30% price increase. Consumers may not notice these changes until late summer, as new products enter the market in anticipation of the school year.

Clothing
A significant portion of American apparel is produced in China and Vietnam, with additional production in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, and Cambodia. These nations have also faced increased tariff rates ranging from 26% to 49%. Experts indicate that the impact of tariffs will be profound on the fashion industry, although specific projections for price increases remain unspecified.

As the situation evolves, American consumers should prepare for potential adjustments in prices across various essential goods, influenced heavily by the ongoing tariff disputes.
