On Shrove Tuesday, from Leopoldstraße to the Viktualienmarkt, the area will be busy with carnival revellers.

However, those who wants to celebrate at Viktualienmarkt have to get up early: from 10 a.m. the band starts and at 11.15 the legendary dance begins.

"This should be a bit like at the Kocherlball" says Angelika Ocker of the Munich market halls.  Each stand can play its own music but without amplifiers. In previous years there were frequent problems with the carnival in the city, simply because too many people crowded in at the Viktualienmarkt. Last year, the celebration took place on a smaller scale for the first time, without a big stage and radio show. This will remain so in the future. Stages are as usual on the Marienplatz and the Stachus.

The Schwabing carnival should also help to equalize the situation in the city. At the Münchner Freiheit stage three live bands are performing. Along the mile, there are other musical and dance performances.  So the carnival revellers will be dancing both at the Viktualienmarkt and Münchner Freiheit. Spontaneously party-goers can let their faces be painted on Leopoldstrasse and even receive a costume. A jury will award prizes for the best costume.
