Hofer Enters the Renewable Energy Market

Fri 4th Apr, 2025

Starting next week, the Austrian discount retailer Hofer will officially launch its renewable energy supply service under the name Hofer Grünstrom. This initiative marks the company's entry into the energy market in partnership with Energie AG Oberösterreich, which will provide electricity sourced from renewable energy outlets throughout Austria.

Approximately 80% of the electricity offered will originate from domestic hydropower plants, emphasizing Hofer's commitment to sustainable energy resources. The company will introduce three different electricity tariffs along with a feed-in tariff, designed to cater to a variety of consumer needs.

Among the offerings, the Grünstrom Fix plan ensures a fixed price for electricity over a twelve-month period, priced at 13.49 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). The Grünstrom Fair tariff, available in the second quarter, is set at 17.30 cents per kWh, which is notably 10% lower than the average electricity price in Austria. Additionally, a spot tariff will be available, priced at 1.9 cents per kWh above the current market price.

For those wishing to contribute their own renewable energy back to the grid, the feed-in tariff will be offered at a rate 1.5 cents per kWh below the previous month's reference market value. This new service positions Hofer alongside its competitor Lidl, which has already established a partnership with gogreenenergy to provide green electricity in Austria.

Hofer's move into the energy sector reflects a growing trend among retailers to diversify their services and respond to consumer demand for sustainable energy solutions. By offering competitive rates and leveraging local renewable resources, Hofer aims to attract environmentally conscious consumers while contributing to Austria's energy transition.
