Alexander Zverev Advances Unchallenged to Vienna Open Semifinals

Fri 24th Oct, 2025

Alexander Zverev secured a spot in the semifinals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna after his opponent, Tallon Griekspoor, withdrew due to back issues. The world number three advanced without playing a full match, following a warm-up session that revealed Griekspoor's physical discomfort. Despite the unexpected progression, Zverev participated in a training demonstration for the audience before the official announcement.

The tournament, taking place at the Wiener Stadthalle, saw two singles quarterfinals conclude quickly on Friday. In the first completed match, Alex de Minaur defeated Matteo Berrettini in straight sets, 6:1, 7:6(4), after a match lasting 104 minutes. De Minaur initially held a strong lead in the second set but allowed Berrettini to close the gap before clinching victory in the tiebreak.

Zverev's advancement marks his 300th win on hard court surfaces in his career. He has now joined Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Novak Djokovic in qualifying for the ATP Finals, which feature the top eight male players of the season and are set to be held in Turin. Zverev is set to face either Lorenzo Musetti or Corentin Moutet in the semifinals, depending on the outcome of the evening match. Notably, this is Zverev's second appearance in the Vienna semifinals; he last reached this stage in 2021 and went on to win the title that year.

In the day's earlier quarterfinal, Alex de Minaur overcame a challenging second set against Berrettini. The Australian, ranked seventh globally, initially held a 5:3 lead but allowed Berrettini to recover, forcing a tiebreak. De Minaur managed to regain composure and secure the win, emphasizing the intense and unpredictable nature of professional tennis. De Minaur, who has a personal milestone ahead with his upcoming marriage to British tennis player Katie Boulter, is now positioned to potentially meet Jannik Sinner in the semifinals, which would be their twelfth career encounter. Sinner currently leads their head-to-head record.

For Sinner, however, a semifinal place is contingent on overcoming Alexander Bublik, the Kazakh player who recently won in Kitzbühel and is seeded eighth in Vienna. The outcome of this match will determine whether Sinner continues his strong run in the tournament and sets up another meeting with De Minaur.

The Vienna Open continues to highlight the physical demands of the tennis season, with several withdrawals and injuries affecting the draw. The event remains a critical stop on the ATP Tour, influencing player standings ahead of the season-ending ATP Finals.
