Investigation Launched into Nurse at Vienna Clinic Following Patient's Death

Tue 11th Nov, 2025

Authorities in Vienna have initiated an investigation into a nurse employed at Favoriten Clinic after the death of an elderly cancer patient under palliative care. The patient, who was in the advanced stages of cancer, was receiving pain management treatments common in palliative settings. Reports have surfaced suggesting that the nurse may have intentionally administered a fatal dose of medication.

The case came to light after colleagues reported that the nurse allegedly made a remark during a shift change, implying that administering higher doses would hasten the patient's passing. Following the patient's death in mid-September, colleagues who took over the next shift noted discrepancies in the medication records. The documentation was found to be incomplete or inconsistent, prompting them to alert the clinic's management. An internal investigation was immediately launched, and the matter was referred to the public prosecutor's office for further examination.

According to officials, there is currently no conclusive evidence confirming an overdose or direct link between the administered medications and the patient's death. The results of the autopsy and further forensic analysis are still pending, making it unclear whether the medication played a causal role in the patient's deterioration or death.

Alongside the primary nurse under scrutiny, another staff member who was on duty at the time is also being investigated. This second nurse had several years of experience at the clinic and is suspected of sharing responsibility for the incomplete medication documentation. However, there is no indication that this individual was directly involved in the medication administration.

Both staff members were immediately suspended from direct patient care as soon as the irregularities were reported. After the conclusion of the internal inquiry, their employment was terminated for violating internal protocols regarding medication documentation.

The Vienna Health Association, which manages the Favoriten Clinic, emphasized its commitment to patient safety and transparency. An independent medical expert was appointed to objectively review the case, and the authorities were notified to ensure a comprehensive investigation. During a press conference, officials confirmed that a second case from January, involving another palliative patient's death at the same clinic, is also under review to determine if similar issues are present.

Due to the ongoing nature of the investigations and privacy regulations, further details about the deceased patients have not been disclosed. The Vienna Health Association reaffirmed that all measures are being taken to protect patient welfare and to fully cooperate with law enforcement as inquiries continue.

This development has raised concerns about medication management and oversight within palliative care units, reinforcing the importance of stringent documentation and adherence to clinical protocols in ensuring patient safety.
