Vienna's Election Campaign Enters Final Stretch

Sun 13th Apr, 2025

The election campaign for the Vienna City Council election set for April 27 is rapidly approaching its conclusion. Originally scheduled for the fall, the date was unexpectedly moved up by the ruling red-pink coalition in mid-January. As a result, the campaign has unfolded in a compressed timeframe, with a packed agenda that also accommodates city parliament sessions.

As the election date nears, activity among political parties intensifies, particularly during the Easter holidays. In the coming week, campaigns will unveil their final poster waves and focal points. The last special session of the Landtag is scheduled for Holy Thursday, following last Friday's final special city council meeting. Decisions are being made right up to the election.

During the last city council meeting, the Green Party criticized the perceived inadequacies of climate policies at both the federal and city levels, specifically targeting the controversial Lobau Highway project. In contrast, the Blue Party plans to address health issues in the upcoming Landtag session, highlighting concerns such as patient bed availability, staff overload, surgical wait times, and closed wards, as communicated to the press.

Despite the upcoming elections, the city council's activities will not cease immediately. Regular sessions are scheduled for the Wednesday and Thursday before the election, as the red-pink coalition aims to pass several laws, including amendments to the event regulations. These meetings were added to the calendar due to the election's rescheduling, as it is customary for legislative sessions to halt shortly before an election.

The final campaign events will be organized shortly after these meetings, although official invitations have yet to be sent. Planning efforts are currently underway, with the city administration preparing essential election materials, including ballot boxes and voting booths. A total of 1,504 polling places will be available on April 27, uniformly open until 5:00 PM. Approximately 1.4 million eligible voters in Vienna will participate in this election, determining the future composition of the city council, the Landtag, and district councils.

Seven parties are competing in the city council election, including the parties currently represented in the city hall: SPÖ, ÖVP, Greens, NEOS, and FPÖ. Additionally, two more lists have qualified to compete across the city after gathering sufficient support declarations. These include the KPÖ/Links and the party associated with former FPÖ leader Heinz-Christian Strache.
