The Schmiere has been in existence since 1989. It evolved from a school theater group and continued for several years as an experimental youth theater group. Over time, it has developed into a large amateur stage that produces versatile theater. The ensemble currently counts 40-50 active members. Each year, a new production is created, which is performed in the autumn. The Schmiere has presented the following forms of theater to the audience: Musical (with its own band), Music theater, Spoken theater, History, Crime, Comedy, Tragedy, Cabaret, Black theater, Variety, Commedia dell'arte. The town of Babenhausen has an old theater tradition and possesses its own theater building, the Theater am Espach, which is the home stage of the Schmiere. The Schmiere has been invited twice to the Schwäbischen Theatertagen, an event that particularly considers active amateur stages in the Schwaben district.
