Jodhpur was once the capital of the Rajput and later princely state of Marwar. Jodhpur is also known as the ‘Blue City’ because of the colour of its houses. Traditionally, the colour blue indicated that the inhabitants belonged to the Brahmin caste, but today non-Brahmins have also adopted this custom. Jaipur is now the capital of Rajasthan and is also known as the ‘Pink City’ due to the uniform pink colour of the buildings in the old city district. It was painted pink in 1876 in preparation for the visit of Crown Prince Albert Edward, Prince of Wales.
