Trial Begins for Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol

Mon 14th Apr, 2025

The legal proceedings against former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol have commenced following his official impeachment. The prosecution has accused the 64-year-old of inciting insurrection by declaring martial law last December, which allegedly constitutes high treason. If found guilty, Yoon faces a potential life sentence, and theoretically, the death penalty could also be an outcome.

Yoon continues to have a base of supporters despite the serious allegations against him. During the initial session of the trial, the charges were formally presented by the prosecution. The accused was given an opportunity to respond to these allegations. Reports indicate that witness testimonies may also be heard on this day.

In early December, while still in office, Yoon unexpectedly imposed martial law amid a deepening budgetary dispute, plunging the nation into a state of crisis. He claimed that the opposition was infiltrated by communist elements and harbored sympathies for North Korea and China, yet he did not provide any evidence to substantiate these claims. Several military personnel have testified that Yoon ordered the military to prevent members of the National Assembly from voting to invalidate his declaration of martial law.

Earlier this month, the Constitutional Court in Seoul finalized his removal from office, marking a significant moment in South Korea's political landscape.
