Tree Stump Fire Contained by Rapid Response Near Waidhofen/Thaya

Mon 6th Jul, 2026

On Monday afternoon, emergency services responded to a fire incident along the L8128 state road between Waidhofen an der Thaya and Brunn. The alert was raised by a municipal worker who noticed smoke emerging from a woodland area adjacent to the roadway. Upon closer inspection, the worker identified a burning tree stump as the source of the smoke, prompting a call to the local fire brigade.

The Waidhofen/Thaya volunteer fire department mobilized quickly, arriving at the site approximately 2.5 kilometers from their station. Municipal staff were already present to guide and brief the arriving firefighters. The fire brigade's team of 14 members deployed specialized vehicles, including a rapid response vehicle, a support vehicle, and a tank fire engine, to efficiently address the situation.

On arrival, the incident commander instructed the team to commence immediate firefighting using the tank engine's high-pressure hose system. The initial focus was to contain the burning stump and prevent the fire from spreading further into the forested area. Firefighters utilized various tools, including a hook and a Halligan bar, to dismantle the stump and expose the core of the fire, enabling more effective suppression of the flames.

Despite their swift action, the fire had already ignited a second nearby tree. In order to fully extinguish the burning roots and prevent potential reignition, it became necessary to fell the affected tree. Chainsaws were used to cut down the tree and to separate the roots, allowing firefighters to reach and douse lingering hotspots. Throughout the operation, a thermal imaging camera was employed to identify and monitor residual heat sources, ensuring that no further smoldering pockets remained concealed underground or within the debris.

To ensure comprehensive fire suppression, the team thoroughly soaked the area around both stumps with water. This precautionary measure aimed to prevent any possible rekindling or extension of the fire, particularly as dry conditions in the forest can facilitate rapid fire spread. The coordinated efforts of the emergency personnel, combined with the timely intervention of the municipal worker who reported the smoke, played a crucial role in limiting the incident's scale and impact.

The fire was successfully brought under control and fully extinguished by 12:20 p.m. The operational procedures followed by the Waidhofen/Thaya fire brigade are consistent with established safety protocols for woodland fires, emphasizing quick response, strategic use of firefighting equipment, and ongoing monitoring of the affected area. The effectiveness of the response highlights the importance of community vigilance and well-coordinated emergency services in minimizing risk to both property and the environment.

No injuries were reported, and thanks to the fast action of both the municipal worker and the fire brigade, the fire was contained before it could spread to a wider area. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential for even small sources of ignition, such as a burning tree stump, to escalate quickly if not addressed promptly.
