Swedish Man Detained on Suspicion of Terror Offenses Linked to Hamas

Thu 29th Jan, 2026

A 23-year-old man was apprehended in the Malmö area after authorities initiated a search based on suspicions of terrorist activities. The arrest followed a period during which he was sought by law enforcement, culminating in his detention shortly after a warrant was issued.

The Swedish Security Service (Säkerhetspolisen), under the direction of the National Unit for Security Cases, is conducting the investigation. Officials report that the case involves alleged violent Islamist extremism with connections to the group Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the European Union. During the investigation, law enforcement carried out searches at multiple locations and seized various items, though the nature of these confiscated materials has not been disclosed due to the ongoing inquiry.

Authorities have not released details regarding the specific nature of the man's alleged links to Hamas, nor have they indicated whether additional suspects are involved. According to security officials, the investigation has been ongoing for some time, but further information about the timeline or the precise period during which the offenses may have occurred has not been made public.

The individual is now facing formal charges in Malmö District Court. He stands accused of participation in a terrorist organization--classified as a serious offense--as well as two counts of aggravated weapons violations. Investigators allege that the terrorism-related activities began in late summer 2025 and continued up until the time of his arrest.

The public prosecutor's office has announced that a detention hearing is expected to be conducted in the near future to determine whether the suspect will remain in custody during the course of the investigation.

Records indicate that the 23-year-old has previous convictions. In 2020, he was found guilty of violent disorder following disturbances that erupted in Malmö in connection with a planned Quran burning. During that event, law enforcement officers were targeted with stones and other objects. Court documents suggest the man was present near the group responsible for throwing projectiles and may have encouraged others to participate in the unrest. Because he was 18 years old at the time, he received a conditional sentence and was assigned 50 hours of community service. Following this incident, he was also convicted of violating knife laws after being found in possession of a baton while in a vehicle.

The 2020 disturbances in Malmö reportedly involved several hundred participants. Significant property damage occurred, including the destruction of bus shelters, damage to police vehicles, and the setting of fires to vehicle tires.

Authorities continue to investigate the current case, focusing on the extent of the suspect's alleged involvement with terrorist activities and any possible associates. Due to the sensitive nature of the inquiry and ongoing legal proceedings, further information will be released as permitted by law enforcement and judicial officials.
