Greek security authorities have announced the dismantling of an alleged terrorist cell following the arrest of a 37-year-old man of Palestinian origin on the island of Crete. The suspect was apprehended as part of an ongoing investigation into suspected links to the Islamist organization Hamas and the planning of potential attacks.

According to information released by the police in Athens, the arrested individual is believed to be connected to two other Palestinian nationals who were detained in Cyprus in recent weeks. Investigators reported that all three suspects reportedly received training in handling explosives in Malaysia, suggesting a coordinated effort across multiple countries.

The 37-year-old suspect arrived in Greece approximately one year ago, where he subsequently applied for and received asylum. He had been working seasonally at a hotel in Agios Nikolaos, a location on Crete known for receiving cruise ships carrying tourists, including travelers from Israel, according to local media reports.

The investigation further revealed that, at the time of the arrest, no operational explosives were found in the suspect's possession. However, authorities discovered that he had allegedly ordered materials online that could be used for the production of explosive devices. During searches of his residence and workplace, investigators confiscated a precision scale, a measuring vessel, and various digital storage devices. These electronic items are currently undergoing forensic examination to determine if there are links to additional individuals or broader networks.

The arrest was reportedly preceded by several days of surveillance following intelligence pointing to potential Hamas affiliation. The lead came from the analysis of mobile phone and computer data obtained during the investigations in Cyprus. Despite being under watch, the suspect did not display any suspicious behavior in the days leading up to his detention and continued his employment without interruption, according to authorities.

Officials have emphasized that the inquiry remains active. Currently, it is still unclear whether there were concrete plans for attacks or which locations might have been targeted. The suspect is expected to be brought before a prosecutor as investigations proceed. Authorities have underlined that all findings are being carefully evaluated and that the presumption of innocence applies until proven otherwise.

The Greek police continue to collaborate with regional and international partners to shed light on the full extent of the network and to identify any potential threats. The investigation is ongoing, and further developments are anticipated as forensic analysis of the seized electronic evidence advances.
