An apartment hotel in Stockholm has been ordered to cease operations after authorities uncovered extensive and ongoing prostitution on its premises. Following an investigation initiated in early 2024, law enforcement officials identified frequent occurrences of illegal sex work at the property, despite repeated warnings and the implementation of additional security measures by the hotel management.
Police began monitoring the establishment after receiving indications that prostitution was taking place within the hotel. Efforts by the hotel to address the problem, including enhanced guest screening, increased staff presence, and expanded surveillance systems, failed to curtail the illegal activity. Law enforcement reported that, even with these measures in place, advertisements for sexual services continued to link back to the hotel address, prompting further scrutiny.
Authorities described the scale of the operation as significant, estimating that as many as 1,600 separate incidents of sex purchasing may have taken place within the hotel. Investigators have linked approximately 60 cases of purchasing sexual services to the establishment, although the real number is believed to be substantially higher. Police have reported making arrests at the location on a near-weekly basis.
Of particular concern was the simultaneous use of multiple rooms for prostitution activities. In the most notable instances, law enforcement observed that up to six or seven rooms were being used for such purposes at the same time. Individuals involved included women from various countries, such as Colombia, Ukraine, and Russia, highlighting the international dimension of the operation.
The property is a self-service apartment hotel located in the Södermalm district of Stockholm. This type of accommodation, which typically lacks a staffed reception or on-site security personnel, has become increasingly common in police investigations related to prostitution. The relative anonymity and ease of access provided by such facilities are seen as contributing factors to their use by individuals engaged in illegal activities.
Since the start of the year, Swedish law has enabled authorities to impose operational bans on hospitality businesses that are found to be run in a manner contrary to public order and safety. The Stockholm hotel is the first establishment to be closed under these new regulations. In addition to the closure, the hotel has been ordered to pay a fine of five million kronor.
Law enforcement officials suggest that similar issues may be present at other apartment hotels across the city and indicate that further investigations are underway. The police emphasize that, although this type of criminal activity has been known to occur for some time, recent legislative changes have provided them with greater capacity to intervene and enforce closures when necessary.
The closure of the Stockholm hotel underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in combating organized prostitution within the hospitality sector. Officials continue to encourage other establishments to maintain vigilance and adopt robust measures to prevent illegal activities on their premises.
