Spanish Riding School Appoints Alexandra Kaszay as New Director

Tue 10th Mar, 2026

The renowned Spanish Riding School in Vienna has announced Alexandra Kaszay as its new managing director. Kaszay, previously responsible for the management of the Hofburg Congress Center, was officially introduced alongside the Austrian Minister of Agriculture and the chairman of the Riding School's supervisory board.

This leadership transition follows the dismissal of former director Alfred Hudler, whose contract was terminated by the supervisory board in September of the previous year. The board unanimously selected Kaszay to lead the institution, emphasizing her extensive leadership background and expertise in tourism and event management.

The new director is set to assume her responsibilities at the beginning of April. The institution's leadership highlighted the importance of restoring stability and focus to the Riding School after a period of internal challenges. The priority moving forward will be to secure the economic foundation of the Spanish Riding School, safeguard the well-being of its Lipizzaner horses, and preserve its status as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage site.

Ongoing developments at the institution include plans to appoint a dedicated manager for the arena by the third quarter of 2026. The school is also preparing for extensive renovation projects at both the Stallburg stables and the Winter Riding School. These renovations will necessitate a temporary relocation of the approximately 70 Lipizzaner stallions starting in February 2027. The search for a suitable interim location and an alternative venue for public performances is underway, though specific details have not yet been disclosed.

The Spanish Riding School has faced a series of organizational and operational challenges in recent months. Following Hudler's departure, interim management was provided by a former high-ranking official from the Ministry of Agriculture. The recruitment process for the new director drew 58 applicants. While investigations into previous administrative practices continue, the supervisory board reported that significant improvements have already been made, although some processes are still being reviewed.

Kaszay has expressed appreciation for the trust placed in her and looks forward to working with the teams at the Riding School, the Piber stud farm, and the Heldenberg training center. While she does not have a background in classical horsemanship, she brings a wealth of management experience intended to support the institution's mission and uphold its international reputation.

The Spanish Riding School remains committed to its traditions of Lipizzaner breeding and classical equestrian performance, aiming to maintain its cultural significance and ensure operational continuity through upcoming transitions and renovations.
