Celebration of Tradition at the Sichelhenke Festival in Dettingen/Iller

Sat 27th Sep, 2025

The village of Dettingen/Iller is set to host its annual Sichelhenke Festival on October 5, 2025, marking the conclusion of the museum season with an array of historical crafts, exhibitions, and regional cuisine.

This year's event will take place at the Dettingen/Iller Village Museum from 1 PM to 6 PM, coinciding with the traditional Harvest Festival Sunday. Visitors can experience a glimpse into the past with a display featuring a nearly century-old cider press, showcasing how apples were historically transformed into cider and apple juice.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to observe traditional blacksmithing demonstrations in a forge that retains the tools and ambiance from the last blacksmith of Dettingen. Furthermore, the nearby cooperage workshop, largely preserved from the last cooper in the area, will illustrate the crafts and products associated with this trade.

This year's special exhibition will feature meticulously crafted scale models of vintage automobiles, providing a nostalgic look at the history of transportation. Additionally, various household and artisanal items from bygone eras will be on display, with knowledgeable guides available to explain their significance and use.

In the museum's living room, skilled women will demonstrate traditional needlework techniques, illustrating the crafts that have been passed down through generations. The barn will host an exhibit of historical bicycles, complete with period accessories.

Festival-goers can indulge in freshly baked Swabian pastries from the museum's historic bakery, available at reasonable prices. The local Trachtengruppe (traditional costume group) will be serving coffee and homemade cakes, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

In addition to standard beverages, freshly pressed apple juice and the popular Swabian cider will be available, ensuring that visitors can enjoy local flavors. Entertainment will be provided by Toni Kartheininger, who will perform original songs in Swabian dialect, adding to the festive ambiance.

The festival will also serve as a gathering point for friends and neighbors from nearby villages, offering a chance to share memories and updates about life in the Illertal communities during a casual get-together.

In the event of inclement weather, the festivities and hospitality will be relocated to a cozy area within the former stable, ensuring that the celebration continues regardless of the conditions.
