Urgent Appeal for Donations to Save Injured Cat Aelfric at St. Pölten Animal Shelter

Fri 3rd Oct, 2025

The St. Pölten Animal Shelter plays a crucial role in the welfare of animals, handling approximately 1,000 cases each year. The shelter serves the Tierschutzverein St. Pölten, which is responsible for the care of pets belonging to around 700,000 residents in Lower Austria, covering a vast area from the outskirts of Vienna to Amstetten and from the Danube River to the Styrian border.

Recently, the shelter faced an urgent situation requiring immediate assistance. A cat named Aelfric has suffered severe injuries after a suspected collision with a vehicle. To save his life, a surgical intervention was essential.

Aelfric is a Scottish Fold cat who narrowly escaped a potentially fatal accident. The injury he sustained includes a complicated fracture of the femur. He underwent an extensive operation at the St. Pölten Veterinary Clinic, which involved hours of meticulous surgical work to stabilize his broken bone using a plate.

As part of his recovery, Aelfric will require at least six weeks of strict confinement to ensure proper healing of the bone. This period will demand close medical supervision, including regular X-ray check-ups and daily physiotherapy sessions. The total cost for his treatment is projected to exceed EUR2,000, prompting the shelter to issue a call for financial support from the community to help cover these essential expenses.

This case is just one of many the dedicated team led by Victoria Bischof encounters regularly. The shelter has been overwhelmed with the rising number of stray cats and their kittens, reaching capacity limits just this past summer.

Currently, there are over 60 cats and more than 40 dogs at the St. Pölten Animal Shelter, many of whom come from difficult backgrounds. The shelter also houses a variety of small animals, birds, and even fish, all awaiting their forever homes.

The shelter's ongoing efforts depend heavily on community contributions, and every donation makes a significant difference in the lives of these animals in need.
