Relative Sentenced After 12-Year-Old Gains Access to Firearm Used in Finnish School Shooting

A Finnish court has sentenced a 69-year-old man to a suspended six-month prison term after a 12-year-old boy used his firearm in a school shooting. The incident occurred at Viertolan Koulu in Vantaa, southern Finland, where the minor shot three classmates, resulting in one fatality and two serious injuries.

The event took place on the first day after the Easter break in April 2024. Following the shooting, the boy left the school on foot but was apprehended by police within an hour. Due to the boy's age, he was not held criminally liable under Finnish law, which led authorities to investigate the circumstances under which he obtained the weapon.

Investigations revealed that the 12-year-old had spent Easter with his relative, the firearm owner. During the visit, the two had practiced shooting in a nearby forest. Upon returning home, the man handed the revolver and some ammunition to the boy, instructing him to store them in an upstairs gun cabinet. However, he did not verify whether the boy followed these instructions.

According to court documents, the man stated that he has routinely allowed his grandchildren interested in firearms to practice with both air rifles and real handguns under adult supervision, aiming to educate them about firearm safety and associated risks. Nevertheless, the court determined that the man bore heightened responsibility due to the boy's young age and should have ensured the weapon and ammunition were properly secured.

Following the shooting, the firearm owner only realized the revolver was missing after hearing news reports about the incident three days later. He was subsequently charged with a firearms offense and admitted to the chain of events during police interviews. The court noted that the failure to secure the firearm directly contributed to the minor's ability to carry out the shooting.

The 69-year-old man had no prior criminal record. The court emphasized the importance of stringent firearm storage procedures, particularly in households with minors, and highlighted the legal obligations of gun owners to prevent unauthorized access to weapons.

The case has prompted renewed debate in Finland over firearm safety, gun ownership responsibilities, and the safeguards necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future. Authorities continue to stress the critical need for vigilance among gun owners, especially when children are present.
