It was founded on 20th October 1934 as Hallesche Krankenkasse V.V.a.G. in Berlin. At that time, the members were looked after by around 200 employees. In order to be cover more areas, 14 district administrations and 52 branch offices were quickly established in the following two years. In 1948, the administration was moved from Berlin to Stuttgart due to political tensions and the fact that Stuttgart was home to one of the few buildings that had not been destroyed.

In 1961 the company was changed to the form Hallesche Krankenversicherung auf Gegenseitigkeit, which prevails to this day. On 28th February 1963, Stuttgart became the company headquarters, in parallel with the Berlin office.

On 21st August 1975, there was a takeover of the Nationaler Krankenversicherungsverein a. G. and a change of name to Hallesche-Nationale Krankenversicherungsverein auf Gegenseitigkeit (Hallesche-National Mutual Health Insurance Association), which now had 470 employees.

The company was renamed HALLESCHE Krankenversicherung auf Gegenseitigkeit on 2nd August 2002. The current Stuttgarter Versicherungsverein was entered in the commercial register on 18th February 1952.

Cooperation with Alte Leipziger Lebensversicherung: In 1973, the cooperation with ALTE LEIPZIGER began. From 1990 onwards, the two companies participated in each other's businesses and in 1994, the two companies merged to form an equal-ranking group. HALLESCHE holds a 10 percent share in ALTE LEIPZIGER Holding Aktiengesellschaft, while Alte Leipziger Lebensversicherung holds around 90 percent.
