ORF Responds to Strong Criticism from FPÖ Regarding Salaries

Tue 1st Apr, 2025

The ongoing debate surrounding the ORF's transparency report, which includes a list of top earners, has sparked significant political controversy. Recently, members of the FPÖ launched sharp critiques against the public broadcaster, prompting an immediate response from ORF.

During a press conference, FPÖ media spokesperson expressed concerns over what he described as the continuing issue of excessive salaries within the ORF. He highlighted the need for the ORF management to disclose not only salary figures but also any bonus payments awarded to high earners. Additionally, he called for a substantial reduction in these salaries by 50 percent, arguing that all sectors should be making cuts, but that the ORF appears to be exempt from this requirement.

Furthermore, he referred to the current state of ORF as a 'privilege club,' suggesting that the organization needs fundamental reforms. He proposed the idea of transforming the ORF into a 'basic broadcasting' service, hinting at the possibility of outsourcing certain public broadcasting functions to encourage competition from other media entities. He noted that the perceived monopoly of ORF is not guaranteed forever, while also emphasizing that the intent is not to dismantle the organization. Instead, he cautioned against allowing Austria to become a mere playground for German private broadcasters.

In response to the criticisms, ORF issued a statement categorically rejecting claims of being a 'privilege club' and addressing other concerns raised by the FPÖ. The broadcaster highlighted that it had indeed communicated details regarding the transparency report through various news segments, including its online platforms and radio programs.

However, the backlash from FPÖ could potentially lead to further scrutiny and analysis from ORF, as the organization indicated that it would carefully assess the allegations made during the press conference and consider any necessary subsequent actions.
