Tue 16th Jun, 2026

Extensive traffic checks were carried out on the A4 near Bruck during the Nova Rock Festival, which took place from June 11 to June 14. Authorities implemented this targeted operation in response to previous years, where a high number of motorists were found driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Recent trends have shown a shift from alcohol-related to drug-related offenses, a pattern that was again confirmed during this year's festival.

During the operation, 86 clinical examinations were conducted, resulting in 80 drivers being identified as impaired by narcotics. Additionally, nine drivers refused to undergo the clinical assessment. Police also performed 565 preliminary and evidential breathalyzer tests, uncovering four cases of alcohol impairment. Nine drivers were cited for insufficient physical or mental fitness to operate a vehicle, and two were stopped for excessive speeding. According to police reports, these two drivers were caught racing on the A4 at speeds exceeding 233 km/h, prompting the immediate confiscation of their driver's licenses.

In total, 104 driving licenses were temporarily revoked as a result of the enforcement action. The focus was not limited to driver impairment; vehicle conditions were also thoroughly inspected. Expert assessors from the provincial traffic department examined 30 vehicles, identifying 100 major technical defects and 50 deficiencies classified as posing immediate danger. Seventeen vehicles had their registration plates removed, and authorities collected security deposits totaling approximately 15,000 euros for various infractions.

The high number of serious defects found in vehicles highlighted the necessity and importance of technical inspections, especially given the increased traffic associated with the festival's arrival and departure periods. According to police, these efforts were crucial in preventing potential serious road accidents during the busy festival weekend.

Medical professionals were present on-site to conduct clinical tests on drivers suspected of impairment, ensuring timely and accurate assessments. The enforcement operation involved 46 officers from the Lower Austria State Police Directorate, supplemented by seven personnel from the Vienna Traffic Department and two from the district police command in Wels. The initiative was further bolstered by international cooperation, with 18 police officers from Germany and two from Switzerland providing advisory and technical support throughout the operation.

Authorities emphasized that the combined efforts of law enforcement and technical experts played a significant role in maintaining road safety and reducing risk during the festival. The extensive controls and cross-border collaboration demonstrate ongoing commitment to addressing both impaired driving and unsafe vehicles during major public events.
