Gipsy Kings: "Music Is a Natural Way of Life"

The Mariazellerbahn, recently recognized as one of Austria's most remarkable landmarks, is scheduled for a comprehensive closure as part of its annual maintenance and modernization program. The railway line, which connects St. Pölten's central station to Mariazell, will be completely out of service from early November until the 21st of the month, as extensive infrastructure improvements are carried out along the entire route.
During the full suspension of train services, replacement bus transportation will be provided to ensure passenger mobility between all affected stations. The planned works are diverse and critical for the ongoing safety and operational efficiency of the railway. Maintenance activities include track stabilization and soil exploration tasks spanning the entire route. In addition, a crucial motorway bridge, situated near Schwadorf and overseen by the national motorway company, will undergo essential repairs.
The maintenance program also incorporates upgrades to the Klangen power conversion facility, installation of new mast foundations, and the erection of modern overhead line masts in the vicinity of Weinburg station. Further, the railway crossing on Linhartstraße in Hofstetten-Grünau is scheduled for refurbishment, while the replacement of bridge sleepers on the Steinklamm Bridge is set to enhance structural integrity. Additional overhead line mast installations will take place between Kirchberg and Loich, accompanied by important vegetation management and slope stabilization work between Schwarzenbach, Frankenfels, and Ober Buchberg.
Tunnel maintenance is also part of this year's agenda, with inspection and repair work planned for the Gösing Tunnel lining. Moreover, rail transport operations will be carried out to facilitate construction projects slated for the following year. The multifaceted nature of these projects highlights the commitment to maintaining the railway's reliability and safety for both daily commuters and visitors to the region.
As a result of these extensive railway works, partial road closures are anticipated at several railway crossings. Locations affected include Mainburg, Wantendorf, Ober-Grafendorf/Ebersdorf, Matzersdorf/Völlerndorf, Hofstetten-Grünau, Kirchberg, and Frankenfels, with each closure scheduled for specific dates throughout the works period. The majority of construction activities are planned to take place during daytime hours, but increased noise levels are expected in some segments of the route. Travelers and residents are advised to anticipate possible disruptions and to plan accordingly.
Tickets valid on the Mariazellerbahn will be accepted on the replacement bus services, and tickets can also be purchased directly from bus staff. To ensure smooth travel, groups and passengers with limited mobility are encouraged to inform the railway's customer service center at least 24 hours in advance. The same advance notification applies for those wishing to transport bicycles during the closure period.
The ongoing modernization and maintenance efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure the Mariazellerbahn remains a safe, efficient, and attractive transport option for the region. These investments are designed to uphold high service standards and to support the railway's continued role in local and regional mobility.
