American alpine skier Lindsey Vonn made a remarkable return to form by winning the opening downhill race of the alpine speed World Cup in St. Moritz. This marks her first World Cup victory since her comeback, solidifying her position as a strong contender for the upcoming Winter Olympics.
Vonn, aged 41, delivered an outstanding performance in a tightly contested event. She finished with a lead of 0.98 seconds ahead of Austrian Magdalena Egger and 1.16 seconds ahead of Mirjam Puchner from Salzburg. The victory was particularly impressive given the competitiveness of the field and the challenging course in St. Moritz.
Preparation for the race saw Vonn dominate the Wednesday training session. However, she was unable to complete Thursday's session after a serious crash involving Swiss skier Michelle Gisin. Despite trailing six-tenths of a second behind Puchner after the first 40 seconds of her race, Vonn excelled in the steep, technical middle section, gaining over 1.5 seconds and maintaining her advantage despite minor time losses in the final stretch.
This win is Vonn's first since March 2018, when she previously secured a downhill victory in Aare before initially retiring. Her recent comeback has been marked by steady progress, including fourth and sixth place finishes in St. Anton and a second-place result in the Super-G at the Sun Valley season finale. During the past summer, Vonn added former Norwegian ski star Aksel Lund Svindal to her coaching team, a move that contributed to her renewed competitive edge and strategic improvements.
Magdalena Egger also stood out in this race, delivering her best-ever World Cup result with a second-place finish. Competing in only her seventh World Cup downhill, Egger maintained a strong pace and was the only competitor to finish within one second of Vonn. Her performance reflects significant progress since her days as a junior world champion, underscoring her potential in future events.
Puchner, who held the top position prior to Vonn's run, performed exceptionally well in the upper sections of the course, particularly in the gliding segments. However, Vonn's superior speed in the technical middle section ultimately proved decisive. Other notable Austrian results included Cornelia Hütter, Nina Ortlieb, and Ariane Rädler, who finished sixth, tenth, and eleventh respectively, further highlighting the strength of the Austrian team.
With this victory, Vonn has reinforced her status as a leading contender for Olympic success. Her continued participation in the season will depend on her chances of securing the overall World Cup title, with her primary focus remaining on the upcoming Olympic Games. The next World Cup downhill race in St. Moritz is scheduled to take place soon, offering another opportunity for competitors to challenge Vonn's dominance.
