Jaguar Land Rover Production Halt Extended Until October

Tue 23rd Sep, 2025

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the British automotive manufacturer, announced that it will not resume production as previously planned. Following an IT incident at the end of August, the company had aimed to restart operations this week, but now it is anticipated that production will remain halted until October 1. The company cited the need for additional time to ensure a gradual restart and to conduct internal investigations.

The prolonged production stoppage is becoming increasingly problematic for JLR's suppliers, with rising concerns that some may struggle to cope with the financial implications. According to a report by the BBC, JLR has already incurred losses amounting to approximately EUR140 million in profits and nearly EUR2 billion in revenue as a result of the disruption.

JLR first disclosed the cyber incident at the beginning of September, indicating that its systems had been proactively shut down to mitigate potential risks. Initial reports suggested there was no evidence of customer data theft; however, the company later acknowledged that some data may have been compromised, prompting them to inform the relevant authorities. In their recent communications, JLR expressed awareness of the significant challenges the ongoing production halt presents, particularly for suppliers and dealerships, many of whom have begun to voice their concerns as some employees face payment difficulties.

The cyber attack has been attributed to the group known as Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters, which claimed responsibility shortly after the incident became public. They released screenshots purportedly demonstrating that JLR is being extorted. This group appears to consist of members from various criminal organizations, primarily composed of young individuals from the UK. Among them are elements of Scattered Spider, known for their attacks on retailers such as Marks & Spencer, Co-op, and Harrods earlier this year, as well as Lapsus$, which has targeted major firms including Rockstar Games, Nvidia, and Microsoft over the past several years. The modus operandi of these groups often involves social engineering tactics to gain unauthorized access to corporate networks.

As the situation develops, JLR continues to prioritize support for its customers and suppliers while working toward a resolution to the ongoing production issues. The automotive industry is closely monitoring the repercussions of this event, which serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities businesses face in the digital age.
