Horse Injured in Suspected Bear Attack Near Piteå

Sun 14th Jun, 2026

A horse was left with significant injuries following a suspected bear attack in a pasture outside Piteå, northern Sweden. The incident took place during the night between Saturday and Sunday, in a rural area characterized by dense forest surrounding the grazing fields.

Three horses were grazing in the pasture when the event occurred. When the horses' caretaker arrived the following morning, she found the animals clustered closely together. Upon inspection, she discovered that a 22-year-old mare had sustained severe lacerations along her abdomen and sides, believed to result from an encounter with a large predator.

Veterinary assessment suggested that the injuries were consistent with those inflicted by a bear. The horse, though shaken, appeared to have survived the attack, possibly due to defensive behavior from the other horses in the group. The veterinarian also believed the mare may have managed to fend off the bear, resulting in the animal's retreat.

The owner of the pasture, who leases the land to horse owners for summer grazing, expressed concern regarding the safety of the animals. In response to the attack, she monitored the area closely for several nights to determine if the bear would return, but no further incidents were observed.

Local authorities responded by enhancing security measures in the pasture. The County Administrative Board of Norrbotten installed eight motion sensors around the perimeter. These devices are designed to emit loud siren-like sounds when triggered by movement, aiming to scare away any approaching predators. Additionally, three wildlife cameras were positioned to monitor activity in the area.

According to the County Administrative Board's wildlife officer, bear attacks on domestic animals such as horses are rare in the Norrbotten region. While there have been reports of predators attacking sheep and incidents involving lynx, this marks the first recorded attack on a horse in the area since at least 2007.

National statistics compiled by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) confirm that bear attacks on horses are uncommon throughout Sweden. The latest available data from 2024 showed no reported cases of horses injured by large predators, although bears did attack sheep and beehives during that year.

Following the incident, the injured mare was moved to a stable several kilometers away, along with the other two horses, while her condition is being monitored. Caregivers report that the mare is gradually recovering but remains under observation. Plans are in place to return the horses to pasture once safety measures are deemed sufficient and the mare's health allows.

The pasture owner continues to reassure horse owners that enhanced protective measures have been implemented, including the use of alarms and surveillance equipment, to minimize the risk of future predator incidents in the area.
