The holiday season brings a heightened risk of residential fires, particularly due to the use of traditional decorations such as Advent wreaths and Christmas trees. As indoor heating dries out these ornamental items, even a small spark can ignite them, causing rapid and potentially devastating fires within seconds.
Authorities in Upper Austria have issued renewed warnings about the dangers associated with open flames during this period. Data from recent months indicate that, as of mid-November, 32 fatalities have occurred in Austria as a result of residential fires. December is considered especially hazardous, with both the frequency of fires and the risk of burn injuries increasing noticeably.
Incidents involving Advent wreaths and candles are a primary concern. Safety experts note cases where unsupervised candles have led to severe accidents. For example, children have sustained burns while reaching across lit candles, and there have been reports of individuals' hair catching fire when blowing out candles. In Upper Austria alone, approximately 100 fires each year are attributed to improper handling of candles on Advent wreaths, Christmas trees, tea lights, and memorial lights.
To mitigate these risks, fire prevention specialists strongly recommend the use of LED string lights as a safer alternative to traditional wax candles. For those who prefer conventional candles, it is crucial never to leave them unattended and to keep them at a safe distance from flammable materials. The risk escalates as holiday decorations, such as wreaths and trees, become drier in the later weeks of December, particularly after the second week and around the time of Epiphany in early January.
Preparedness is also emphasized as an essential safety measure. Having a jug or bucket of water nearby, or better yet, a fire blanket or fire extinguisher, can provide immediate response in the event of a fire. Additionally, the installation of smoke detectors is advised, as they can offer critical early warnings and potentially save lives during emergencies.
Fire safety organizations continue to stress the importance of vigilance and proper handling of open flames during the festive season. Their guidance aims to ensure that families can enjoy holiday traditions safely, without risking fire-related injuries or property damage.
