The Swedish government has released its spring budget, highlighting concerns about impending economic difficulties, yet it notably lacks significant measures aimed at directly supporting households.
Experts have pointed out that the budget appears relatively sparse, with no substantial initiatives designed to bolster household finances. Notable economist Stefan Westerberg from Länsförsäkringar remarked on the absence of direct financial relief for families during these challenging times.
One of the few changes in the budget includes an increase in the home renovation tax deduction, known as the ROT deduction. Under the new guidelines, individuals will be able to deduct 50% of labor costs, with a maximum deduction of 50,000 kronor per person per year. Previously, the deduction stood at 30% with the same cap. The government has allocated 4.35 billion kronor to support this initiative, which will take effect on May 12 and remain in place for the remainder of the year.
However, financial analysts express skepticism regarding the extent of benefits this measure will provide to households. Arturo Arques, an economist from Swedbank and Sparbankerna, noted that the primary intention behind this reform seems to be supporting the renovation industry rather than directly assisting families. He, along with other economists, including Américo Fernández from SEB, has emphasized that this change is unlikely to significantly impact a large number of households. The Swedish Economic Institute has also projected minimal effects from this adjustment.
In addition to the ROT deduction, the budget includes a rise in unemployment benefits, set to be implemented on August 1. This adjustment was initially planned for October but has been moved forward in the revised budget. According to calculations from Swedbank, this increase will yield better compensation for those earning 34,000 kronor or more during the first 100 days of unemployment. However, after this period, benefits will decrease across all income brackets.
Furthermore, there was anticipation surrounding the extension of supplementary benefits for families with housing allowances, currently set at 25% until June. Many had expected this measure to be extended through the end of the year, but the finance minister has indicated that while it is not currently in the budget, it could be revisited if economic conditions worsen.
During a press conference unveiling the budget, the finance minister faced numerous inquiries regarding support for households. She referred to earlier tax reductions as forms of assistance and suggested that the ROT deduction could have positive ripple effects for families.
As the economic landscape continues to shift, the government has indicated a willingness to reassess support measures should the situation deteriorate further.
