Liberals in Gothenburg Signal Willingness to Collaborate with Sweden Democrats

Thu 30th Oct, 2025

The Liberal Party in Gothenburg has indicated a readiness to engage in cooperation with the Sweden Democrats (SD) following internal discussions and consultations within its council group and broader membership. This shift is intended to be reflected in the party's upcoming election manifesto, pending final approval at the annual meeting scheduled for February.

Historically, local political dynamics in Gothenburg have differed from national trends. While the Social Democrats and the Left Party currently govern the city in coalition with the Green Party and Centre Party, such alliances do not mirror the national political landscape. Until now, the Liberals and other center-right parties in Gothenburg have not pursued strategic collaborations with the Sweden Democrats, largely due to the existing center-left majority in the city council.

With next year's municipal elections approaching, the Liberals' new position alters the political landscape in Sweden's second-largest city. The announcement comes just weeks before the party's national convention, where a decision will be made on whether to continue cooperating with SD under a renewed Tidö Agreement, albeit without supporting a government that includes SD ministers.

Despite this new openness, significant policy differences remain between the Liberals and the Sweden Democrats, particularly concerning funding for education. The Liberals have proposed substantial increases to both primary and preschool education budgets, areas where SD's priorities diverge. Nonetheless, party representatives believe that if negotiations after the election become necessary, agreements could be reached through pragmatic discussions.

The proposal for closer cooperation has been positively received by other center-right parties in Gothenburg. The Moderate Party has expressed longstanding openness to budget negotiations with SD, viewing the Liberals' new stance as a constructive development. Similarly, the Christian Democrats have emphasized their focus on policy outcomes rather than rigid exclusions of potential partners, signaling flexibility in future coalition negotiations.

The Democrats, another local party, have already cooperated with SD on various individual proposals. The party's leadership has welcomed the Liberals' decision, viewing it as a move towards more inclusive policymaking and away from what they describe as the isolation of SD in local politics.

For the Sweden Democrats, the Liberals' announcement does not come as a surprise. Despite differences in key policy areas, SD representatives have indicated a willingness to engage in mutual compromise, emphasizing that any collaboration would reflect the proportional influence of each party.

However, previous controversies have complicated potential alliances. The SD's group leader in Gothenburg has faced allegations related to past online posts containing discriminatory content. While the individual has denied authorship and an internal party investigation concluded without definitive findings, the issue remains a point of contention for some local politicians. The Liberals have stated that they have not set any specific conditions regarding this matter for future cooperation.

The final decision on formalizing this new approach rests with the Liberal Party's annual meeting in February. The district chairperson has described the draft manifesto as clear and policy-focused, aiming to prioritize effective negotiation over setting non-negotiable boundaries.

On the opposing side, the Social Democratic leadership in Gothenburg has criticized the Liberals' move, expressing concerns about the impact of political collaboration with SD given the city's diverse population. They have raised issues regarding the societal climate and past controversies involving SD members, arguing that the decision risks marginalizing communities with foreign backgrounds and undermining social cohesion.

As Gothenburg heads towards the next municipal election, the Liberals' shift signals a potential realignment of alliances, with the possibility of more fluid coalitions emerging in the city's political landscape.
