As global crises increasingly shape our society, experts are raising alarms about their repercussions on mental health. Events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation, armed conflicts, and climate change introduce significant challenges for both communities and individuals.
Among the most vulnerable are those already grappling with difficult living conditions or existing psychiatric disorders. Experts stress that loneliness has emerged as a critical issue in this context. Social isolation exacerbates feelings of loneliness, which can elevate the risk of mental health disorders. Research indicates that loneliness is linked not only to psychological distress but also to physical ailments, including cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, prolonged loneliness can significantly hinder recovery from existing health issues.
Individuals who experience chronic loneliness often perceive social interactions as threatening, leading them to withdraw further from social engagement. This phenomenon not only affects individuals but also presents broader societal challenges, such as declining community involvement. The experience of loneliness during crises highlights how existing problems can be intensified while also being highlighted, creating opportunities to address previously stigmatized issues openly.
Addressing the prevention and treatment of crises is a fundamental responsibility of psychiatry. However, the ongoing shortage of psychiatrists in Austria complicates the provision of adequate care. Experts call for modern, forward-looking healthcare structures to meet current demands. This includes adapting the training of psychiatrists to align with contemporary needs. There is a pressing need for policymakers to implement long-discussed concepts to prepare for future challenges, such as the consequences of climate change and ongoing conflicts across Europe.
From April 2 to April 5, 2025, over 500 psychiatrists will convene in Vienna for the 25th Congress of the Austrian Society for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, and Psychosomatics (ÖGPP). The event will focus on socially relevant factors in psychiatric care, as well as new medical advancements in prevention, diagnostics, and treatment.
