Ghost driver claims four lives

Four people were killed in an accident involving a ghost driver on Tuesday evening on the 99 freeway near Hohenbrunn (Munich district).

At around 9:40 pm, the police received a report of a wrong-way driver on the road towards Salzburg. Shortly thereafter, the severe head-on crash of two cars ocurred, as was reported by the Abdendzeitung.

According to the police, two of the victims, a 34 and 43-year-old man were driving in the right lane towards Salzburg. At the Hohenbrunn exit they were suddenly faced by another car driving in the wrong direction. In addition to the driver, a 50-year-old passenger was also sitting in the wrong-way vehicle. The vehicles crashed head-on into each other, killing all four men.

It was unclear how long the dirver who caused the accident had been driving in the wrong direction on the highway before the incident. According to the police, there were initially no indications that he had consumed alcohol or drugs.

The highway to the south was closed until well into the night at the vicinity of the accident site. According to the police, other vehicles were damaged by parts lying around after the accident.

So far, the exact cause of the accident could not be determined. For clarification, the public prosecutor's office has commissioned an accident analysis report.
