German Weather Service Issues Flood Warning

Wed 29th May, 2024

The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a warning about potential flooding in the southern and southeastern parts of the country due to continuous and heavy rainfall expected over the coming days. Meteorologist Marcel Schmid, speaking from Offenbach, cautioned that severe weather conditions are anticipated, particularly affecting regions from Lake Constance to the Thuringian Forest and East Saxony.

"We are anticipating significant rainfall this weekend, coinciding with the eleventh anniversary of the devastating floods that impacted parts of Bavaria," stated Schmid. He reassured the public, however, that the rainfall amounts would be less severe than those recorded during the 2013 floods.

From Friday to Sunday, DWD forecasts suggest widespread rainfall ranging from 70 to 120 liters per square meter, with localized areas potentially experiencing up to 150 liters per square meter. "Flooding and inundation are then inevitable," Schmid emphasized. Conversely, regions such as Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, recently affected by major floods, are expected to receive significantly less rainfall.

The DWD noted that while these predictions are robust, uncertainties remain, and more specific warnings will be issued by Thursday evening or Friday morning. Reflecting on past events, the 2013 "flood of the century" caused around 1.3 billion euros in property damage in Deggendorf and other parts of Bavaria. Since then, substantial improvements have been made to flood defenses.

Thursday's weather is forecast to be partly cloudy with intermittent showers and thunderstorms, including areas of heavy rain. Coastal regions can expect longer periods of sunshine. Temperatures will range from 16 to 20 degrees Celsius, reaching up to 22 degrees in the east, accompanied by light to moderate winds from various directions.

On Friday, the potential storm situation is expected to intensify in the south and southeast with heavy, persistent rain. Other parts of the country will experience showers and isolated thunderstorms, with the northwest likely seeing some sunny intervals. Maximum temperatures will vary between 18 and 24 degrees, with areas experiencing persistent rain seeing lower temperatures of 11 to 16 degrees.

For Saturday, the DWD predicts ongoing heavy rain from Lake Constance to Lusatia. Other regions may experience a mix of sun and clouds with isolated showers or brief thunderstorms. The west and northwest are expected to enjoy longer sunny periods.

The DWD urges residents in the affected areas to stay informed about the latest weather updates and to prepare for potential flooding. As the situation develops, timely and accurate information will be crucial for minimizing damage and ensuring public safety.
