The German trade fair sector plays a pivotal role in the national economy, contributing over EUR30 billion in economic impact each year. This is underscored by recent findings from a comprehensive study conducted by the economic research institute Prognos, commissioned by the Association of the German Trade Fair Industry (AUMA). The study reveals that at least 280,000 jobs across Germany are sustained by activities surrounding trade fairs, and public authorities at the federal, state, and municipal levels benefit from more than EUR5.4 billion in tax revenues generated by the industry.

The Prognos report is based on extensive surveys involving more than 33,700 visitors and over 17,700 exhibiting companies, conducted between September 2024 and October 2025 across 30 trade fairs at ten major German exhibition centers. Data provided by Messe Frankfurt, one of the sector's key players, highlights its individual contribution, accounting for over 30,000 jobs and generating EUR667 million in tax income nationwide.

Germany's trade fair industry is recognized as a strategic sector that facilitates international business connections and supports export growth. Approximately two-thirds of the world's leading trade fairs take place in Germany, making the country a global hub for international exhibitions. These events are particularly significant for small and medium-sized enterprises, offering vital opportunities to expand into international markets. Furthermore, trade fairs serve as economic catalysts for regional economies, benefiting sectors such as hospitality, retail, and skilled trades.

Key industry stakeholders have called for continued government support to maintain Germany's leading position as a trade fair destination. Priorities include modernizing and digitizing visa procedures for international guests, investing in top-tier transport infrastructure, reducing administrative requirements, and expanding trade fair support programs that reflect Germany's status as a leading export nation.

The trade fair calendar for 2026 commences with the PSI European Promotional Products and Merchandising Fair in Düsseldorf. Throughout the year, 320 trade fairs are scheduled to take place across Germany's 70 exhibition venues, with Stuttgart notably hosting 25 events, followed closely by Cologne and Nuremberg with 24 each.

Preliminary data from AUMA for 2025 indicate positive developments across all major industry metrics. On the 304 trade fairs held in the previous year, 190,490 exhibitors participated, reflecting a 0.7% increase compared to prior editions. The total exhibition space also grew by 0.7%, surpassing 6.9 million square meters. Visitor numbers experienced a significant rise of 3%, exceeding 12.8 million attendees.

Germany's robust network of 70 trade fair venues is considered unique worldwide. The industry attracts more than 235,000 exhibiting companies and up to 16 million visitors in peak years. International participation remains strong, with 65% of exhibitors and 35% of trade visitors at leading fairs coming from outside Germany. These statistics highlight the sector's essential contribution to the country's prosperity and its role as a cornerstone for economic growth, employment, and tax revenue generation.

As the global trade fair landscape evolves, the German industry continues to adapt and invest, reinforcing its reputation as a premier location for international business exchange and innovation.
