FPÖ Calls for Reform in Vienna's Housing Policies

The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) has expressed strong criticism of the current housing policies in Vienna, particularly targeting the management of rental prices and the operations of Wiener Wohnen, the city's largest housing provider. FPÖ housing spokesperson Michael Oberlechner has stated that the most effective measure to control rental prices would be a reevaluation of the practices at Wiener Wohnen.

Oberlechner highlighted that recent attempts to implement rental price controls have not succeeded, characterizing the new proposals from the SPÖ (Social Democratic Party of Austria) as ineffective. He described the SPÖ Vice Chancellor and Housing Minister, Andreas Babler, as lacking substantive solutions, referring to him in a derogatory manner as a 'pocket-sized Napoleon' in housing policy.

According to Oberlechner, a significant reduction in rental costs could be achieved if the current pricing model at Wiener Wohnen shifted to a cooperative-based rental system. He emphasized that this change could potentially lower rents by approximately one-third. Despite these suggestions, he criticized the SPÖ for being reluctant to make necessary changes, implying that political affiliations and job security for party members may be hindering progress.

Oberlechner reiterated the FPÖ's commitment to ensuring that municipal housing prioritizes the needs of the Austrian populace rather than the interests of political elites. He called for a housing strategy that focuses on affordability and accessibility for residents, free from political interference.

In conclusion, the FPÖ is urging a significant overhaul of Vienna's housing policies, with a focus on transparency and accountability in the management of public housing, aiming for a system that serves all citizens fairly.
