Eine Zierde für den Verein
In this theatrical adaptation based on Marieluise Fleißer's novel, the story follows Gustl Gillich, a tobacco dealer and local swimming star, who falls in love with Frieda Geier, a traveling saleswoman in a male-dominated field. However, when Gustl sees love as a business opportunity and views Frieda merely as a cheap labor source, he loses her and turns to misogyny and male camaraderie for solace. Fleißer's work, celebrated for its incisive portrayal of societal issues during the turbulent times of the Great Depression and the rise of the Nazi party, sheds light on the intersections of personal relationships, social dynamics, and political unrest. The performance, directed by Elsa-Sophie Jach, emphasizes a female narrative voice and critiques toxic masculinity, resonating with today's ongoing struggles for women's rights.
