Danish Companies Seek Swedish Talent Amid Labor Shortages

Danish employers are actively recruiting skilled Swedish workers to address significant labor shortages in various sectors. The growing demand for cross-border employees has opened new opportunities for Swedish jobseekers, particularly those in the southern region of Skåne.

With persistent unemployment levels in southern Sweden, many qualified individuals have struggled to secure employment matching their education and skills. Recent data from the Greater Copenhagen collaboration highlights a mismatch between available positions in Denmark and the number of unemployed Swedes who could fill these roles.

The report identifies major shortages in eight sectors, including construction, sales, hospitality, information technology, administration, education, and healthcare. Improved coordination between Danish employers and Swedish jobseekers could yield substantial economic benefits, with estimates suggesting up to 13 billion SEK in potential regional gains if the labor market is better utilized.

One example of cross-border mobility is seen among young professionals from Skåne who have opted for employment in Copenhagen. Many cite better working conditions, competitive salaries, and broader career prospects as key reasons for making the daily commute. The commute, often involving multiple modes of public transport, remains a challenge, but the benefits of working in Denmark are viewed as outweighing the logistical difficulties.

The process of working across the border involves navigating administrative requirements such as securing Danish identification numbers and setting up local banking arrangements. Despite these hurdles, successful integration into the Danish workforce is increasingly seen as an asset, providing both professional experience and personal growth for those who take the step.

Regional leaders emphasize the untapped potential in the Öresund region and call for reforms to remove obstacles that hinder cross-border employment. They note that while Swedish employment agencies encourage mobility within Sweden, such as moving to the north to meet labor demands, there is less focus on leveraging opportunities in the adjacent Danish market, despite its proximity and demand for labor.

The report also points out challenges faced by non-EU residents living in Sweden who possess skills needed in Denmark but are restricted from working there due to legal limitations. Addressing such regulatory barriers could further enhance the region's workforce potential.

As discussions continue between Swedish and Danish authorities, the emphasis remains on recognizing the value of fully integrating the cross-border labor market. Regional policymakers argue that enabling more efficient labor mobility would not only reduce unemployment in Sweden but also contribute to economic growth on both sides of the Öresund strait.

The Greater Copenhagen organization, a partnership for growth and development in the Nordic region, continues to advocate for policies that facilitate labor movement and foster economic cooperation between southern Sweden and eastern Denmark.
