Bomb Threat Disrupts Mass at Karlskirche Ahead of March for Life: A New Low for Religious Intolerance

Sun 5th Oct, 2025

On October 5, 2025, a bomb threat at a mass held in the Karlskirche in Vienna has sparked significant concern regarding religious freedom and the safety of peaceful gatherings advocating for life. The incident occurred just prior to the 'March for Life' event, which aims to protect the rights of the unborn and promote a pro-life message.

Lisa Schuch-Gubik, a member of the Austrian National Council and spokesperson for the Freedom Party (FPÖ), condemned the bomb threat as a targeted attack on those who peacefully support life. She emphasized that this situation highlights the rising tide of religious intolerance in the country, particularly against Christians.

Prior to the mass, certain groups, such as 'Marsch Fürn Arsch Wien,' openly called for disruptions and blockades of the event through social media. Some posts even depicted the Karlskirche in flames, which Schuch-Gubik interpreted as incitement to violence and hatred against Christians.

Schuch-Gubik criticized the lack of accountability for such provocative statements, stating that it is unacceptable for calls for violence to go unpunished in Austria. In response to the alarming trend of left-wing extremism targeting religious communities, she announced plans to submit a parliamentary inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the bomb threat and the response of security agencies.

She expressed a desire to understand the measures taken by the Interior Minister to prevent such incidents and why there appears to be an increase in violence against Christians. Schuch-Gubik asserted that threats against churches and intimidation of worshippers represent a fundamental attack on the values of Austrian society.

As the situation continues to unfold, the Freedom Party emphasizes the need for a robust response to religious intolerance and the assurance of safety for all individuals exercising their right to freedom of religion.
