Heat Advisory and Memorable Moment at Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg

Fri 26th Jun, 2026

The Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg is set to take place under unusually high temperatures, with forecasts predicting up to 36 degrees Celsius for race day. This has prompted the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to issue a heat advisory to ensure the safety of drivers and attendees. Despite the intense weather conditions, the majority of Formula 1 drivers appear untroubled, with some even expressing familiarity with such temperatures due to their backgrounds or previous experience in similarly hot climates.

For the 2026 season, drivers have access to new cooling technologies, marking only the third time since the 2025 regulation change that they may wear shirts equipped with a special cooling fluid system beneath their race suits. The innovation was previously permitted at the Singapore and Austin Grands Prix. To maintain a level playing field, regulations stipulate that an additional 0.5 kg of ballast must be carried in the cockpit to counteract any advantage gained from the lighter cooling garments.

The all-time Formula 1 heat record stands at 42.5 degrees Celsius, recorded in Bahrain in 2005. While the temperatures at Spielberg may not reach this extreme, the conditions are expected to have a more pronounced impact on spectators, particularly those in uncovered seating areas. Organizers have taken precautionary measures by recommending appropriate headwear and providing free water dispensers and sunscreen throughout the venue. Attendees are allowed to bring their own bottles, up to 1.5 liters in capacity, provided they are not made of glass. The use of umbrellas is permitted on grassy areas but is restricted in the grandstands to avoid obstructing the view of other fans.

Despite the challenging weather, the atmosphere at the Red Bull Ring remains vibrant. This was highlighted by a significant personal event on the track: a marriage proposal on the start-finish straight, which drew enthusiastic reactions from those present and momentarily shifted focus away from the soaring temperatures.

From a broadcasting perspective, the coverage of Formula 1 in Austria is undergoing changes. ServusTV has extended its contract to continue broadcasting Formula 1 races until 2029. Notably, there was no simultaneous announcement from ORF, a previous broadcasting partner, as had been customary in earlier years. This absence has raised questions regarding the future involvement of ORF in Formula 1 transmissions, especially in light of recent cost-saving measures at the broadcaster. The details of any potential continued partnership between the two networks have yet to be clarified, leaving some uncertainty about future free-to-air coverage of the sport in Austria.

As preparations continue for race day, both participants and organizers remain focused on maintaining safety and ensuring an enjoyable experience for all, while navigating the challenges presented by the high temperatures and evolving media landscape.
