Austrian Motorway Toll Stickers to Become Fully Digital by 2027

Wed 8th Oct, 2025

From 2027, Austria will transition to a fully digital system for motorway and expressway toll stickers, replacing the traditional adhesive versions. The move marks the end of the physical sticker, a fixture on Austrian vehicles for decades. The digital vignette will continue to be available through a wide network of sales channels, including tobacconists, petrol stations, motorway toll booths, automotive clubs, and additional partner outlets. This ensures both online and offline purchasing options remain accessible for all motorists.

Currently, motorists can purchase digital vignettes from over 3,500 sales points across Austria, as well as via the official Asfinag online shop. Additionally, approximately 100 vending machines at 30 locations nationwide allow for instant purchase and use of the digital vignette. Purchases made at physical locations or vending machines activate the digital vignette immediately, whereas online purchases remain subject to an 18-day consumer protection period before becoming valid.

The transition to a fully digital system is designed to streamline the process for drivers, eliminating the need to physically apply or remove stickers from vehicle windshields. In addition to enhanced convenience, the digital format offers features such as subscription options, automated reminders for renewal, and simplified handling for vehicles with interchangeable registration plates.

The final adhesive vignette, to be issued for 2026, will feature a bright red color. For the 2026 period, the price of a full-year Austrian motorway toll sticker will increase to EUR106.80, reflecting a 2.9% adjustment in line with the consumer price index. The pricing update was confirmed by Asfinag, the operator of Austria's motorway and expressway network.

Data indicates that digital vignettes are already the preferred choice for the majority of annual users, with approximately 75% of yearly toll stickers currently purchased in digital format. The existing network of distribution partners will be further expanded to ensure comprehensive access as the transition approaches.

The Ministry of Transport has outlined multiple benefits to the shift, including improved user-friendliness and a more modern, environmentally sustainable approach to motorway toll collection. The new system aims to facilitate the daily routines of millions of drivers by reducing administrative effort and waste associated with adhesive stickers.

Motorists will continue to have the option to purchase digital vignettes at their preferred physical locations, ensuring that individuals who do not wish to buy online are not excluded. The government and Asfinag emphasize that all necessary support and information will be provided to ensure a smooth transition for all users.

This policy aligns Austria with broader European trends towards digitization and supports ongoing efforts to modernize public infrastructure and services. The fully digital vignette system is expected to deliver long-term benefits, including more efficient management and greater flexibility for both authorities and drivers.
