Wien's Rising Crime Rates Prompt Calls for Action from City Leadership

In light of the recently released crime statistics, significant concerns have arisen regarding public safety in Vienna. The local party leader of the Vienna People's Party, Karl Mahrer, has urged the city government to take decisive action in addressing the root causes of rising crime rates. Recent data reveals alarming trends, with nearly half of all knife-related offenses in Austria occurring within Vienna's borders. Furthermore, violent crime in public spaces has surged dramatically, rising from 10% in 2010 to an alarming 42% in recent years.

Mahrer highlighted the precarious situation in public transportation and other key areas, labeling the safety conditions as critical. Notable hotspots, including the U6 subway line and various busy intersections, parks, and public squares, have become areas of concern for residents and visitors alike. He emphasized the need for these zones to receive adequate attention and intervention to prevent them from becoming permanent threats to public safety.

The call for action includes the establishment of a specialized task force dedicated to addressing so-called 'safety zones,' which would work closely with law enforcement and local authorities to enhance police presence and implement swift measures to restore security.

Moreover, the statistics reveal a troubling trend regarding foreign suspects, who account for 57.1% of total criminal offenses. Mahrer has pointed to the extensive social benefits and inclusive policies of the current city administration as potential magnets for criminal activity.

The issue of youth crime is equally concerning, with the number of individuals under 18 implicated in crimes rising from 8,360 in 2010 to 14,804 in 2024. This escalation underscores the urgent need for a robust and effective approach to youth violence.

Mahrer has reiterated the necessity of implementing a comprehensive 10-point safety plan, along with an action plan specifically targeting youth violence. This strategy includes the introduction of a Vienna City Watch to support and alleviate pressure on the police, expanding video surveillance in public areas by adding 5,000 cameras, and establishing zero-tolerance zones that would see increased police activity.

Lastly, Mahrer has called for a fundamental overhaul of education and integration policies, stressing the importance of addressing the underlying causes of crime. He proposed a suspension of family reunification processes as a critical step toward ensuring peaceful coexistence within the community. The emphasis, according to Mahrer, should be on fostering integration that demands responsibility rather than allowing parallel societies to emerge.
