US Secretary of State Rubio Affirms Greenland's Desire for Independence

In a recent statement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted the importance of Greenland's self-determination, asserting that the people of Greenland do not wish to be governed by Denmark. During his departure from Brussels, Rubio remarked that discussions regarding Greenland's autonomy have been ongoing among its inhabitants for some time, emphasizing that the United States did not instigate these sentiments.

This declaration comes in response to Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen's vehement criticism of US annexation proposals, which he labeled as violations of international law. Rubio urged Denmark to acknowledge that Greenlanders have expressed a clear desire for independence.

Additionally, Rubio sought to clarify comments made by former President Donald Trump, who had suggested the possibility of using military means to secure Greenland. Rubio indicated that Trump's remarks were intended to convey a broader point about the potential risks Greenland could face from foreign powers, specifically China or Russia. However, he reiterated that the ultimate choice lies with the Greenlandic people, and should they decide to pursue independence, the United States would be open to forming a partnership.

Rubio's discussions with Rasmussen in Brussels were described as direct and forthright. The Danish minister took to social media to express his concern over any claims of annexation, stating that such assertions are not only unacceptable but also disrespectful. He further emphasized that they could amount to a breach of international law.

Former Danish Prime Minister Rasmussen characterized the meeting as constructive, showcasing a photo of the two leaders together. However, he later removed a post that included a reference to champagne, which some interpreted as a historical nod to Winston Churchill's resilience during World War II.

Rubio has openly supported Trump's ambitions regarding Greenland, stating that they are serious and not mere jest. The Danish government has generally refrained from inflammatory remarks towards Washington, opting instead for a more diplomatic approach. Minister Rasmussen recently expressed a willingness to engage with the US regarding security interests in Greenland, noting that the US has previously maintained a stronger presence on the island.

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, during a visit to Greenland, firmly rejected any threats of annexation by the United States, asserting that it is not permissible to annex another country. She reiterated Denmark's commitment to enhancing US security presence on the island through existing bilateral agreements.

Trump's repeated assertions regarding Greenland have encountered significant backlash, with both Greenland and Denmark firmly opposing any notions of annexation. The Danish government positions itself as a guardian of the Greenlanders' right to self-determination, which has been enshrined since 2009. Polls indicate a strong sentiment among Greenlanders against becoming part of the United States.
