US Military Continues Strikes Against Houthi Forces in Yemen

Wed 19th Mar, 2025

The US military has resumed its attacks on positions held by the Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen. Central Command (Centcom) announced that operations against the militant group would persist, sharing two videos on social media platform X showing combat aircraft taking off from an aircraft carrier and a missile strike.

Reports from Arab media, citing eyewitness accounts, indicate that the strikes targeted locations in the northern province of Sadah, a known stronghold for the Houthis. The Houthi faction claimed late Tuesday that they had attacked the USS Harry S. Truman, an aircraft carrier, for the fourth time within 72 hours. They also alleged that enemy naval vessels contemplating an assault on Yemen were targeted, although this information could not be independently verified.

In a related development, the Houthis launched a missile at Israel for the first time since a ceasefire was reached between the Hamas militant group and Israel approximately two months ago. The Israeli army reported that the missile was intercepted before it could reach Israeli territory. Concurrently, Israel resumed extensive airstrikes on Hamas across the Gaza Strip, resulting in significant casualties, according to the health authorities controlled by Hamas, who reported over 400 fatalities and numerous injuries. This figure also remains unverified.

Since Saturday, the US military has intensified its strikes against Houthi positions following directives from President Donald Trump. The Houthis claim that at least 53 individuals have died as a result of these attacks. Airstrikes were reported in the vicinity of the port city of Hudaida and the capital city of Sanaa, which is situated approximately 230 kilometers away. President Trump issued a stern warning on his platform, Truth Social, stating that any fire directed by the Houthis would now be regarded as an act of aggression by Iran itself, implying severe repercussions for the Islamic Republic.

Previously, Iranian officials had threatened serious countermeasures in response to US actions. The Houthis control significant territories in Yemen and have escalated their missile and drone assaults against Israel in solidarity with Hamas since the onset of the conflict in Gaza in October 2023. They have also targeted vessels, particularly those alleged to have ties to Israel, navigating one of the world's crucial maritime trade routes along Yemen's coast.
