Telephone Scams Result in Significant Financial Losses in Carinthia

In a troubling wave of telephone fraud, two elderly residents of Klagenfurt fell victim to scams on Friday, resulting in substantial financial losses amounting to several tens of thousands of euros.

Authorities reported that the first incident occurred around noon when an 84-year-old man received a call from an individual claiming to be a doctor treating his son. The scammer informed the man that his son was seriously ill and required a costly medication. During the prolonged conversation, the victim, believing the story, handed over valuable jewelry and cash to a collector who arrived at his home. The suspect, described as wearing jeans and a light-colored sweater and speaking in a standard German accent, fled the scene in a vehicle.

Later that evening, an 85-year-old woman was approached through a similar deceitful phone call. The fraudster informed her that her daughter had been involved in a fatal traffic accident and now needed to pay bail to secure her release. Distressed by the news, the elderly woman delivered all her jewelry to a man waiting in a parking lot near her apartment complex.

These incidents highlight the increasing prevalence of scam operations targeting vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly, who may be more susceptible to such manipulations. Law enforcement officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and to verify any extraordinary claims made over the phone before taking action.

The police are currently investigating these cases and are encouraging anyone with information to come forward. Community members are advised to discuss such scams with family and friends to raise awareness and prevent future occurrences.
