Specialized Unit Established for Drone Defense Amid Increasing Incidents

Recent incidents involving unauthorized drone flights have raised significant concerns among authorities in Brandenburg, leading to the establishment of a specialized police unit dedicated to drone defense. The state's Interior Minister emphasized the need for enhanced security measures as drone overflights have been perceived as serious violations of airspace.

According to the Interior Minister, preparations have been underway for several years, equipping the police with specialized technology and trained personnel. This initiative aims to position Brandenburg as better prepared for potential drone-related disturbances compared to other federal states. However, the minister acknowledged that if the frequency of these incidents continues to escalate, additional measures may be necessary.

During a recent event commemorating the 35th anniversary of German reunification, this specialized unit was deployed to provide security against drone threats. While specific operational details were withheld for security reasons, the presence of the unit underscored the seriousness with which the authorities are treating this issue.

The rise in drone incidents is not isolated to Brandenburg; it has been a growing concern across Germany and Europe. In recent weeks, airports, including Munich, experienced multiple drone sightings that disrupted operations. This situation has sparked a broader discussion about how to effectively manage and regulate unauthorized drone activity.

The Interior Minister described the current situation as a significant breach of airspace, with concerns that some drones may be operated for espionage purposes. The federal government is also examining the potential involvement of foreign entities, with suspicions directed towards Russian control of certain drones, although these claims have been categorically denied by Moscow.

Authorities are exploring various defensive measures, including the use of technology capable of forcing drones to land or even intercepting them. The minister mentioned that while shooting down drones may be considered in extreme cases, it poses substantial risks, particularly with larger and potentially dangerous drones.

Collaboration among federal and state authorities is deemed crucial to create a cohesive response to the drone threat. The Interior Minister stressed the importance of cooperation over jurisdictional disputes to ensure effective action against unauthorized drone activity.

So far this year, Brandenburg police have reported 84 sightings of drones of unknown origin, which is significantly higher than the previous year. Additionally, drones have disrupted flights around the Berlin Brandenburg Airport several times, highlighting the pressing need for regulatory measures and effective countermeasures against drone-related incidents.
