Munich Airport's passenger and baggage checkpoints are becoming safer, faster, and more practical. Bavaria will activate five new computed tomography (CT) scanners in Terminals 1 and 2 in time for the Whitsun holiday.

These devices generate highly detailed, fully rotatable 3D X-ray images. The Bavarian commercial airports will all have them installed in the future. Christian Bernreiter, the transport minister for the state of Bavaria, unveiled the devices at the airport today and stated, "We have put the technology through rigorous testing, and the results are unequivocal: Passengers like the scanners because they no longer have to unpack their laptops and liquids, which makes the checks must faster. The CT scanners also offer extra security by seamlessly and automatically spotting explosives and other dangerous objects. Therefore, Bavaria is spending more than EUR 45 million to outfit all of the checkpoints at Munich Airport with cutting-edge technology.

More passengers can put their luggage on the belt at once at the new checkpoints, which cuts down on waiting times. Thus, a double lane can accommodate 520 passengers per hour, or an increase of about 160 percent. According to Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport, "The new CT scanners are the next level in terms of security, quick processing, and convenience. In addition to the two pilot systems operating at Munich Airport's Terminal 2 since 2019, Bavarian travelers are the first in Germany to fully benefit from contemporary security technology when three additional screening lanes in Terminal 1 and two in Terminal 2 go into operation at the start of the Whitsun holidays. By the beginning of the summer vacation in 2026, all other checkpoints will have undergone ten additional construction phases of up to 48 lanes and 60 CT scanners. The first machine at Nuremberg Airport, which is scheduled to undergo a complete upgrade during the same time frame, has been in use since the end of February. The technology will be added to Memmingen Airport, the third airport in Bavaria, during the upcoming structural upgrade.

The Aviation Offices of Southern and Northern Bavaria, which are a part of the regional governments and answer to the Bavarian Ministry of Transport, are in charge of conducting security checks at the three airports in Bavaria. Since 2019, the security firm and the company that runs Terminal 2 have successfully piloted the new technology with the help of the Southern Bavarian Aviation Office in the regional government of Upper Bavaria.
