SPÖ Criticizes FPÖ for Lack of Action on Affordable Housing

In a recent statement, Klaus Seltenheim, the Federal Secretary of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), expressed strong criticism of the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) regarding their track record on affordable housing initiatives. He highlighted the recent implementation of a rent freeze as a critical social measure that directly benefits numerous households.

Seltenheim emphasized that the SPÖ has taken decisive action in the first week following the formation of the new government by instituting a rent freeze. This policy is projected to prevent a significant increase in rental prices, which would have risen by over three percent in April without such intervention. The freeze applies to various rental categories, including municipal housing and subsidized cooperative apartments. He noted that this measure provides substantial financial relief to millions, amounting to approximately 138 million euros.

He pointed out that Vienna serves as a successful model of social housing policy, where around 60% of residents live in subsidized housing that offers affordable rents, stable contracts, and high living standards. Seltenheim argued that the city effectively protects public housing from speculation, invests in new construction and renovation projects, and ensures that housing remains an accessible right rather than a luxury. He criticized the FPÖ for attempting to undermine this recognized success story, suggesting it reflects their lack of a coherent housing policy.

Seltenheim concluded by reiterating that affordable housing is a serious concern for the SPÖ, contrasting it with the FPÖ's perceived approach as merely a public relations tactic. He reaffirmed the commitment of the SPÖ to take responsibility in addressing the housing needs of the population.
