Rosenkranz to Delegate Leadership in National Fund for Victims of National Socialism

Fri 11th Apr, 2025

Walter Rosenkranz, the National Council President from the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), has announced that he will delegate his responsibilities as the chair of the National Fund for Victims of National Socialism. This decision was confirmed during a statement made to a local newspaper. Although he will retain the official title of chair, he plans to allow either the Second National Council President, Peter Haubner of the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), or the Third President, Doris Bures of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), to manage the day-to-day operations.

Rosenkranz has consistently emphasized the importance of adhering to legal standards while fulfilling his commitment to step back from active involvement. As reported, he intends to refrain from public appearances at celebratory events or award ceremonies, marking a significant shift in his role.

The National Council President is required to wait for the formal announcement of a new legislative provision, which is anticipated in the coming weeks. The revised constitutional amendment will stipulate that the National Council President can be represented by either the Second or the Third President in a comprehensive manner. Rosenkranz clarified that while he will remain the official head of the fund, he will no longer engage in public functions.

Criticism has been levied against Rosenkranz due to his affiliation as a member of a student fraternity, which has raised concerns among victim advocacy groups and the Jewish Community of Austria (IKG). In response to these concerns, a new provision was introduced through an initiative by the Green Party in the National Council, allowing the chairmanship to be transferred to the Second or Third President when necessary. The FPÖ has publicly criticized this legislative action, labeling it as a politically motivated response.

As the political landscape evolves, the possibility of the Second National Council President, currently Haubner, being elected to the chair position remains. This would occur if a request is made by the political members of the board, which includes both current and former members of the National Council and Federal Council. Should there be any objections regarding Haubner, the Third President could also be nominated for the role.

Rosenkranz's decision to step back from public engagements while retaining his title reflects the ongoing discussions surrounding leadership roles and representation within the National Fund. This move could potentially reshape the public perception of the fund's management amidst ongoing debates on its operational integrity and alignment with the values of the communities it serves.
