Rising Fuel Prices in Austria: Karfreitag Marks Peak Costs

Fri 18th Apr, 2025

In Austria, fuel prices are experiencing a notable increase, particularly today, on Good Friday. The ÖAMTC (Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Touring Club) has reported that current prices at gas stations are significantly higher than those seen in recent years, despite a decrease in crude oil prices due to changing international trade policies.

As of now, the price per liter of diesel is approximately EUR1.50, while super petrol is slightly more expensive. This marks a considerable rise from mid-2021 when diesel was priced around EUR1.20 per liter, with super petrol costing about five cents more. One contributing factor to the current elevated prices is the recently implemented CO2 pricing, which adds 16.5 cents to the cost of diesel and 15 cents to super petrol, inclusive of VAT.

Despite lower crude oil prices, which suggest that fuel costs could decrease, these reductions have not yet been fully reflected at the pumps. The ÖAMTC indicates that there is a potential for prices to drop by at least five cents per liter, signaling a disparity between current market conditions and consumer pricing.

Interestingly, some gas stations are currently offering prices as low as EUR1.40 per liter, highlighting the importance of price comparisons for consumers before filling up their tanks. The significant difference in pricing can lead to considerable savings, especially during the busy Easter travel period.

As consumers prepare for holiday travel, it is advisable to monitor fuel prices closely and consider alternatives to ensure the best possible rates. The volatility in fuel pricing continues to be influenced by international market dynamics, domestic tax policies, and environmental regulations.
