Revitalizing Conservative Parties: A Call for Authenticity

Tue 1st Apr, 2025

The recent decline in support for conservative parties should serve as a wake-up call for their leaders. A shift back to core conservative principles is essential to reconnect with disillusioned voters. Recent polling data indicates that the Moderates have seen a drop of 2.5 percentage points, landing at 15.2%--the lowest since 2017. Meanwhile, the Sweden Democrats have also decreased by 0.9 percentage points, now at 23.1%. In contrast, smaller parties within the Tidö coalition, namely the Liberals and the Christian Democrats, have experienced slight gains, reaching 3.8% and 4.8% respectively.

The left block, including the Green Party and the Centre Party, has also seen some fluctuations, while the Left Party has registered a modest increase. The most significant advancement has been made by the Social Democrats, who have gained two percentage points to reach 33.3%, thereby reinforcing their lead. Notably, this political landscape suggests that the Liberals may not secure a place in the parliament in the upcoming elections.

Part of the Moderates' decline can be traced back to the handling of the Landerholm affair, where the government's failure to address security concerns adequately has drawn criticism. However, the combined loss of 3.4 percentage points by the Moderates and the Sweden Democrats cannot be solely attributed to this singular event. The rise of the Medborgerlig Samling (MED), which has recently surpassed the one percent threshold, indicates a broader trend where voters are seeking a party that actively promotes conservative values rather than merely managing governance.

MED's growth signals a demand for a conservative identity that resonates with voters' expectations. It appears that established conservative parties are losing touch with their base, particularly in light of recent policy decisions, such as the controversial ban on certain hunting weapons--an issue that may seem narrow but reveals deeper disconnects. Conservative leaders are perceived as succumbing to external pressures rather than addressing the needs of their constituents. Many traditional conservative voters recall the commitments made by the Moderates, Sweden Democrats, and Christian Democrats to the hunting community, which they now feel have been betrayed.

This situation emphasizes the urgent need for conservative parties to recommit to their foundational policies and avoid alienating their voter base with unnecessary distractions. The core issue lies not in the particulars of hunting regulations but in the absence of a clear vision and steadfastness in principles. Voters outside urban areas plagued by gang violence deserve more than mere token gestures like reduced taxes; they require genuine representation that reflects their values and concerns.

Winning elections is not sufficient; fulfilling promises and adhering to conservative principles is paramount. Failing to honor commitments can erode trust and further fragment the conservative voter base, leading to a potential crisis of identity among major parties.

To reverse this trend, conservative parties must stop reacting to the left's agenda and instead cultivate their own. A strong, defined stance is necessary to regain voter trust. Constituents are calling for clarity and integrity, not capitulation or concessions.
