Pope Francis surprised the faithful with a public appearance at St. Peter's Square following a special Mass dedicated to the sick as part of the Holy Year 2025. The Pope, who had been hospitalized for 38 days, was assisted by a staff member in a wheelchair, receiving a warm welcome and applause from the gathered crowd.
During the event, he expressed gratitude to the attendees, emphasizing the significance of the day dedicated to the sick and healthcare professionals. Despite his recent health challenges, which include the use of supplemental oxygen through nasal tubes, the Pope's presence was a poignant reminder of his commitment to those suffering and the healthcare community.
In a written Angelus prayer, Pope Francis called upon divine love to reach those in pain and to inspire those who care for them. He acknowledged the struggles faced by healthcare workers, urging for better working conditions and support, as well as respect for their vital role in society.
Furthermore, the Pope made a heartfelt plea for peace, particularly highlighting the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. He condemned the violence that has led to significant civilian casualties, including children, and called for a cessation of hostilities and a return to dialogue. His message extended to other troubled regions, including the Middle East, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, and Haiti, where violence has surged.
Prior to his public appearance, approximately 20,000 faithful had gathered for the Mass, which was led by Archbishop Rino Fisichella in the Pope's absence. Archbishop Fisichella read a sermon that reflected on the Pope's experiences with illness, noting that sickness can be a profound test of one's resilience. The Pope's message emphasized that even in moments of vulnerability, one is not abandoned by God, and it is through such trials that individuals can find solace in divine presence.
The Pope's remarks also included encouragement for healthcare professionals, reminding them that their care for patients, especially the most vulnerable, is a pathway to renewal and compassion. He urged them to view their work as a chance to cultivate gratitude, mercy, and hope, enriching their own lives as they assist others.
His recent return to the Vatican came after a significant recovery period, during which his health has reportedly improved. Speculation regarding his appearance at the Mass had arisen after the Vatican hinted at a possible public engagement. The event was marked by the attendance of numerous sick individuals and their companions, who had traveled to Rome at the Vatican's invitation.
The Holy Year 2025 commenced with the opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter's Basilica on December 24, 2024. Such holy years occur every 25 years, although extraordinary years may be declared, as seen in 2015-2016.
