New Eco-Friendly Enkplatz Opens in Simmering with Community Celebration

Sun 30th Mar, 2025

On April 4th, the newly renovated Enkplatz in Simmering will officially open to the public, following an extensive transformation aimed at enhancing climate resilience and urban livability. The revitalized main square features over 2,100 square meters of green space and an additional 38 trees, providing much-needed shade during the hot summer months.

The renovation aligns with the city's initiative to reduce asphalt surfaces and promote green areas, significantly upgrading the local environment. The project includes more than 70 new seating options, responding to community feedback for increased opportunities to relax and socialize. Additionally, six misting stations and an interactive water feature with 18 ground jets will offer refreshing coolness during warmer weather.

The project, which lasted nearly nine months, is part of a broader strategy by local authorities to enhance the quality of life in Simmering and across Vienna. Community members are invited to join the inauguration festivities, which will run from 2 PM to 8 PM and feature live music, food stalls, a magic show, and face painting for children.

Local officials emphasized the importance of public input in the redesign process. Feedback collected from residents indicated a strong desire for increased greenery, cooling elements, and spaces conducive to gatherings. The Enkplatz is intended to serve as a vibrant community hub where events and markets can flourish, remaining a focal point for local activities.

With 1,000 square meters of perennial beds and 1,160 square meters of natural meadows, the redesigned space promotes biodiversity and improves air quality. The newly planted trees not only provide shade but also contribute to cooling the area, while the use of permeable paving enhances rainwater absorption, supporting tree growth and alleviating pressure on the drainage system.

The project is part of a city-wide initiative that has launched 320 similar projects across all districts, focusing on greening and cooling urban spaces. With a total investment of 100 million euros, these efforts have resulted in the creation or renovation of 243,000 square meters of parks and green areas--equivalent to 34 football fields--and the planting of over 3,000 new trees.

As the city continues to evolve towards a more sustainable future, the Enkplatz stands as a testament to community engagement and environmental responsibility, ensuring a pleasant and inviting atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.
