Neunkirchen's Schafferhofer Garden Faces Vandalism: SPÖ Proposes Surveillance

Fri 18th Apr, 2025

In response to a series of vandalism and theft incidents at Neunkirchen's Schafferhofer Garden, local city council member Gerlinde Metzger from the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) has proposed a motion for the installation of surveillance cameras in the area. This proposal was introduced during a recent council meeting, where it was ultimately rejected.

However, an alternative proposal was accepted, which calls for FPÖ Vice Mayor Marcus Berlosnig and Metzger to collaborate on identifying critical locations for potential camera placement. Despite this agreement, no meeting to discuss these matters has taken place as of now.

The decision to consider surveillance has arisen due to increasing concerns from residents and local officials regarding safety and security in the park. With incidents of vandalism becoming more frequent, the need for effective monitoring has been emphasized as a key measure to deter criminal activity.

Local community members have expressed mixed feelings about the proposal. While some support the idea of surveillance as a necessary step for enhancing safety, others raise concerns about privacy and the implications of constant monitoring in public spaces.

As discussions continue, it remains to be seen how city officials will balance the need for security with the community's desire for privacy. The outcome of these deliberations could set a precedent for similar measures in other public areas across the region.
